Upper Mustang trek | Trek to Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is a remote and desolate region of Nepal sets amongst windswept hills on the borders of Tibet. Mustang region has a strong traditional Buddhist culture. The number of tourists allowed to visit the region is limited by the Nepal Government and it is open to only a few trekking groups each season. The Mustang trek follows an established trail that once was a thriving trade route between Nepal and Tibet. The final destination on trek is the walled city of Lo Manthang where the once king of Mustang reigns over what was his tiny kingdom until recently.
Life in Lo-Manthang has continued much the same as it has for centuries, the people are extremely religious with numerous Gompas, Mani walls (prayer walls) and curtains surrounding the palace and prayer flags flutter above each household.
They are also rugged and well adapted to the region with many centuries of experience of surviving in what is a particularly harsh climate.
The tour commences with a flight from Katmandu to Jomsom via Pokhara. The trekking route crosses the villages of Tangbe, Samar, Geling to reach Tsarang considered as one of the highlights of the tour, a day before Lo Mangthang.
It is expensive to visit the region, a single permit cost $500 U.S. for ten days, the permit can be extended at a further $50 U.S. a day. All provisions must be carried on, accommodation is in a tented camp with full Nepali support staff. The upper Mustang trek is truly a memorable one that offers something very different than many other treks in Nepal.
